"If You Cannot Measure, You Cannot Control it"
I just finished my last lecture of Quality in Management couple hours ago. We did the overview of the subject to prepare us for the upcoming final exam. Anyhow, I just realize that there are some interesting statements for information management in term of quality for performance excellence. These statements are:
- if you don't measure results, you cannot tell success from failure,
- if you cannot see success, you cannot reward it - and if you cannot reward success, you are probably rewarding failure,
- if you cannot recognize failure, you cannot correct.
These statements emphasize the importance of measurement in every action or task that we perform. Sometime we might just finish with the output without performing any post-implementation analysis to control further tasks. If you're lucky, it might be that your output will give you a long term benefit. However, we cannot just depend on luck forever! Bottom line, "if you cannot measure it, you cannot control it" (TBS950 2010)
